The Universidad de Colima has a library search system. However, this library search system only helps in determining whether a library has acquired an specific bibliographic material or not.
There exists a necessity of improving and integrating library search services on Internet, for instance, with the current library system, books cannot be reserved from the web and there is no way to know whether books are available or not for check out. Furtheremore, the quick grow of databases and information has created a necessity and opportunity at the same time to extract "knowledge" from these databases by using datamining techniques. In order to accomplish this objetive, we will use Web Services developed in ASP.NET by using Visual Studio .NET as our main project development tool and VB.NET as our programming language.
This way, we are enhancing the current library system of the Universidad de Colima with specific services that will make it more functional.
This thesis project is in great part hands-on as we develop a complete searching and book reserving sytems. However, the use of information technologies requires a great deal of research. Next, we present the order in which such research was carried out:
Chapter one provides an introduction to SIABUC (The Universidad de Colima Automated Library System) along with some history of SIABUC and the University and the current status of the online library system.
Chapter two presents new approaches of developing applications on Internet using Microsoft tools and reviews the XML Web Services.
In the last chapter, we describe the development of web services for searching and book reserving online for SIABUC 8.
